報告簡介

Today, there is significant emphasis for the production of hybrid and electric vehicles as a means to reduce tailpipe emissions and greenhouse gases arising from internal combustion engine vehicles. Most automotive manufacturers are already, or will soon be mass producing these vehicles. Part of the reason for this initiative has come about through global legislation which mandates significant reductions in tailpipe emissions across the manufacturers’ fleets of vehicles. More recently, both France and the UK have mandated the end of sales of internal combustion engine passenger vehicles by the year 2040.

In modern electric vehicles, there are several aluminum high pressure die-castings used in housing and packaging applications. These castings all have significant thermal management requirements. Here, the thermal conductivity of high pressure die-casting (HPDC) aluminum alloys is considered. Improving the thermal conductivity of die-castings via novel heat treatment methods may have significant performance and cost benefits for electric vehicles and other applications utilising high performance electronics.

報告人簡介

Professor Roger Lumley is Head of the Department of Engineering at Latrobe University in Australia. He has over 20 years’ experience in materials science & engineering, manufacturing, research, and project management. Roger has a science degree in Metallurgy (BSc.Hons1), a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, and a higher doctorate in Engineering (D.Eng), all from the University of Queensland. Roger is a chartered engineer (CPEng) in the fields of Mechanical Engineering, Leadership and Management, and he has gained Engineering Executive (EngExec.) status with Engineers Australia. In

addition to being a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences (FTSE) and Engineering, he is also a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers (FIEAust), Australia. In 2014, Roger was awarded Victorian Engineer of the Year by Engineers Australia. He is a member of Materials Australia, the American Foundry Society, the North American Die- Casting Association as well as The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society. Areas of expertise include (ferrous and non-ferrous) metalcasting, foundry technology, advanced (ferrous and non-ferrous) heat treatment, self-healing materials, non-destructive testing, welding, powder metallurgy, quality systems and additive manufacturing. He has authored over 100 technological publications including patents, journal and conference papers, book chapters, and a book.

In addition to his full time role, Professor Lumley continues to work part-time as Technical Manager for AWBell Pty Ltd., an AS9100C accredited investment casting, sand casting and production machining company in Australia who works in Aerospace, Maritime, Medical, Mining, Construction, and Automotive industries. He is an advocate for Australian manufacturing and in 2015, led a team that won the Australian Industry Research Group Medal for development and commercialization of advanced metal-casting technologies. His work has also helped AWBell gain a Governor of Victoria export award in 2016.
